We seek to introduce and develop study circles in Japan as a form of lifelong learning rooted in the Swedish tradition of folkbildning.
Folkbildning emphasises learning that is shaped collectively—deciding together, learning together—through dialogue, mutual respect, and equality. In study circles, participants learn with one another rather than from an authority, valuing each person’s experiences and perspectives as sources of knowledge. We aim to share and expand these principles through our work.
By caring for one another and co-creating learning spaces, we strive to build and sustain places where democratic learning can be practiced in everyday life. Through experiencing study circles grounded in folkbildning, we hope that many people will carry these ways of learning into different areas of society.
Guided by this vision, we founded Study Circles Japan (Study Circles de Manabi o Tomo ni Suru Kai) in 2022.
Broadening one’s perspective means expanding the world one inhabits.
Looking ahead, we aim to further develop study circles as spaces that connect not only people living in Japan, but also people across borders—creating shared learning grounded in dialogue, solidarity, and global citizenship.

About Us
